April 2009 | A Year of Anniversaries
To coincide with the 250th Anniversary of the introduction of the £10 note and the death of Handel we designed and installed a small commemorative display in the Rotnda at the Bank of England Museum. Handel was a an entrepreneurial promoter as well as a composer, and made a fortune during his lifetime, as seen in his accounts in the Bank's ledgers on display and investigated on the BBC's website. Also on display are £10 notes issued by the Bank since 1759, including some of the original artworks. The back of the current £10 note features Charles Darwin who was born 200 years ago, and whose ‘On the Origin of the Species’ was first published 150 years ago. A plaster model for the Royal Mint's £2 coin commemorating Darwin's Anniversary is also on display.
