Refreshing change at the Royal Mint Experience.

Sometimes projects can throw up unusual problems and although the project may not seem particularly ‘creative’ it can require fresh thinking and perseverance to come up with a solution.

The Royal Mint Experience opened in 2016 and had a successful first 10 years. The permanent displays were in need of a refresh and update, in common with all public exhibition spaces, but following the death of Elizabeth II leading to the issuing of new coins of King Charles III the need for updates became pressing.

Tour

In 2003 Tuch were engaged to redesign the graphics and refresh some displays in the factory tour rooms. All text is in English and Welsh.

Permanent galleries
In 2026 following a review of the main permanent display with the RME and Museum staff it became clear that there were a few problems to overcome. And the install had to be completed over a day and a half.

There were some large glass panels that required redesigning - but the RME’s original fit-out firm was no longer trading. We managed to track down the manufacturers of the panels and arrange for some updated panels to be installed, and others to be removed and replaced with graphics.

One panel needed to line up with an existing wall graphic, and have an aperture in the graphic to fit a screen behind it.

Updates and additions

Throughout the display there were references to Elizabeth II, outdated technology and methods, and obsolete statistics which needed updating . Some instances could be patched, but others required more extensive solutions.

Science projects were commissioned to repair some interactivesand replace others.

They also painted the white models illustrating sayings about coins, and the wishing well.

The popular lift a gold bar interactive, a previous Science Projects build, was moved to the gold area and installed, along with security cameras.

The original site of the gold bar was modified to create an interactive area featuring working antique arcade games.

Redesign for the Orrery gallery at Jodrell Bank

Tuch worked with our long term partners Science Projects on the revamp of the Orrery gallery at Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement, part of the University of Manchester.

The brief

Science Projects had designed and built an Orrery - a hand cranked interactive mechanical model of the solar system - for the Jodrell Bank many years ago, and were refreshing the gallery with other hands-on and screen based-interactives. Tuch were commissioned to design and project manage the installation of the graphics for the gallery and produce interpretive graphics for the interactives. Jodrell Bank had recently undergone a rebrand and their new guidelines gave a clear direction, helping the fast turn around and delivery of an effective design solution.

We designed background and interpretation graphics including lightboxes and

window vinyls, and a large suspended ceiling graphic above the Orrery.

The Cosmic timeline

An 8 metre corridor to the gift shop and exit had an existing etched wall and suspended fibre optics lighting. We created a Cosmic timeline running from now back to the Big Bang which was installed using a framed stretch fabric graphic the length of the corridor.

The Orrery is open now.

New Space Station store opens in Handsworth, Birmingham

A new Space Station Self Storage site has opened in Handsworth, Birmingham with signage, graphics and marketing material by Tuch Design.

In addition to self storage and office space, the Handsworth store includes a box shop retail area offering branded packing and protective materials, and a bright, welcoming reception space.

We worked with Space Station on proposals and planning for the look of the store, and on marketing material and door drops to publicise the opening.

Branding and website for Clarendon Medical clinic in Farnham

The Clarendon Medical clinic is now open in Farnham, Surrey. Tuch developed the brand identity and shopfront signage for the clinic with long-term client Sarah Burns. The clinic specialises in advanced regenerative and aesthetic treatments, and there are plans to incorporate a Medical practice and pharmacy in the future.

We developed the clinic’s website in Wordpress and provided guidance and support for the client’s to carry out ongoing edits.

Secret Life of Coins exhibition at the Royal Mint Experience

Our latest temporary exhibition design for the Royal Mint Experience explores the many and varied ways we use coins – other than for spending and saving.

Themes

The display tells stories of some of these uses in objects, images, film and animation. From tossing coins at the start of a football match or carrying them as lucky charms, to use in games and magic tricks, for conveying political messages and warding off disease.

Coin tricks
One theme explores coins in music, and a playlist of extracts from popular songs mentioning coins soundtracks the exhibition. From Brian May's sixpence plectrums to David Suchet's unusual use of a £1 coin some of the examples make the mind boggle!

Animation
Working with Clay interactive we created a lively animated projection for the back wall showing how coins are used to keep the time accurate on Big Ben's clock.

We also created our first kinetic object mount, a swinging pendulum to show how pre-decimal pennies are used to regulate the clock's mechanism.

Objects on display include a full Maundy coin presentation and magic tricks.

The exhibition accompanies the Royal Mint Museum's new podcast series on the Secret Life of Coins, interview excerpts from the podcast can be heard on the exhibition listening posts.
